"Then take a stone, and place it in the hole, and fancy that the gold is still lying there. It will do you quite the same service; because when you placed the gold there, you had it not, as you did not make the slightest use of it."

Suatu hari ada seorang kikir yang menjual seluruh harta miliknya untuk membeli sebongkah emas. Setelah membelinya, emas tersebut dikuburkan dalam sebuah lubang di tanah di sisi dinding tua dan ia mengunjunginya setiap hari. 

Salah satu pekerja nya menyadari seringnya ia berkunjung ke tempat itu dan memutuskan untuk melihat gerak-geriknya diam-diam.
